The zealous policeman Viktor Schuler is sent to the Zurich Schauspielhaus by his superior to observe the left-wing theatre scene. He soon succumbs to the charm of the chaotic life of an artist. He falls in love with the actress Odile Lehmann, whom he is supposed to monitor. More and more he begins to doubt his mission.
