There are stars, and then there are phenomena. Amitabh Bachchan belongs to the second category: a larger than life figure whose shadow falls across five decades of Hindi cinema, and whose image reshaped what a screen hero could be, feel, and mean for people all over the world. In 2022, as the world slowly emerged from the shadow of the pandemic and cinemas were devoid of audiences, Film Heritage Foundation hatched an audacious plan to curate Bachchan Back to the Beginning - a first-of-its-kind retrospective screening 11 landmark films from the 1970s and ‘80s of the superstar over 4 days in 17 cities across India to celebrate his 80th birthday. The result was a frenzy that saw audiences flocking to the cinemas.

Inspired by Film Heritage Foundation, this July, Cinema Akil invites you to (re)visit the works of the star who revolutionized Bollywood's action heroes, not through spectacle alone, but through a smoldering interiority that felt entirely new. Playing the angry young man at a time when India was going through a difficult period, Bachchan attracted audiences to characters who stood up against the system, and in doing so, gave millions a mirror and a voice.
Across seven films spanning the 1970s through the 1990s, this retrospective traces the full arc of his craft. The vigilante justice of Deewar. The bandits and heroes of Sholay. The three lost brothers of Amar Akbar Anthony. The gangster world of Kaalia. The love story across two countries in Khuda Gawah. And the more personal, human stories of Abhimaan and Namak Halaal, where Bachchan proved he was far more than the rage he was famous for.
To watch these films on the big screen is to understand something no streaming window can convey: the particular electricity of a star in full command, in the era that made him.
